This is one painting in a series of 16 self-portraits painted by Grace Divine and inspired by Gustav Klimt.
In the words of the artist:
"This painting is titled THE KISS OF DEATH... because in it I AM DEAD! If you notice, the vines and roots of plants are growing over my feet and ankles. And instead of a man kissing the woman, which is the case in Gustav Klimt's painting, DEATH IS KISSING ME, thus the kiss of death. That is why the man in the cloak does not have a face but is complete darkness. However, this is NOT a negative painting. In fact it is the opposite. You see, death is a part of life! But more so, in this painting, I am holding a KEY in my right hand. This key represents passage into the next world or the next life. And typically, people interpret Klimt's geometric figures in the clothing and surrounds as mere decor. In my painting, each of the rectangles in the cloak of death represents A PASSAGE or DOORWAY into another dimension or life. Hence, I hold the key to inmortality which I will use as I enter this key into the doorway that will transport me into an afterlife. In addition, you will notice that I AM NOT COMPLETELY DEAD. This might be difficult to see with this image, but on my forehead there is a third eye. It is violet in color. And it is open. This represents my soul being awakened. This is my soul which still palpitates with life adn can see. Finally, the viewer of the painting is instructed to SPEAK OUT LOUD the title ...GRACE I WANT YOU TO LIVE. This is taken from biblical commentaries which attribute the beginning of life to the power of THE WORD. Hence, in this painting I am telling the viewer that I believe they have the power to give my soul life! In this painting, the esoteric meaning lies in the occult power of belief. Here, the transformation occurs in the viewer as they are empowered to give life through art." GRACE DIVINE
